Our musicians perform at a large number of hospitals across the UK; from small community hospitals to large general hospitals. A Music in Hospitals concert is an uplifting experience for patients, staff and visitors alike.
Concerts are held for a vast range of patient groups from those in general medical care to those in long stay rehabilitation and can take place in day rooms, on wards and at the bedsides of those who are too ill to be moved. Music in Hospitals presents small groups of musicians who perform sensitively and are able to move with ease along wards and between bedsides.
Research commissioned by Chelsea & Westminster Hospital, which was funded by the Arts Council, reveals the introduction of live music into healthcare enhances the quality of life of patients, improves communication, empathy and understanding of patients’ needs, reduces stress and the perception of pain and often leads to a reduction in the level of medication required or can shorten length of stay in hospital.
This research, which was carried out by Dr Rosalia Staricoff (Arts in Health: A review of medical literature, 2004), is important to our work as it validates what we know to be true from our own experience and the feedback we receive every day from our beneficiaries.
